Demanding Accountability

When I first ran for Congress, I pledged to bring integrity and accountability to Washington, D.C., and I took an oath to unequivocally preserve, protect, and defend the United States Constitution. During my first term in Congress, I have honored these commitments, ensuring that all government officials, regardless of party or position, adhere to the highest standards of integrity and accountability.

Holding Our Officials Accountable

Congress is entrusted with overseeing federal agencies and taking action when they fail to fulfill their duties. Unfortunately, after a year-long investigation, it became clear that Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas had systematically breached the public's trust by refusing to comply with the law. He also failed to cooperate with the Homeland Security Committee's investigation, prompting me to support his impeachment to restore integrity to our government.

I have also held Members of Congress accountable for failing to meet these standards, including:

  • Adam Schiff, Former Chairman of the Intelligence Committee, for misleading the American people for political gain;

  • Rashida Tlaib for making antisemitic statements that incited violence against Israel supporters; and

  • Jamaal Bowman for illegally pulling a fire alarm to obstruct a vote on the House floor.

Bipartisan Accountability

Putting partisanship aside, I acted swiftly to hold Republican Congressman George Santos accountable for lying to his constituents, misusing campaign funds, and violating campaign finance laws. Despite being a member of my own party, I was one of the first to call for his resignation and expulsion from Congress. On December 1st, 2023, I supported his expulsion to protect the high standards of representation in our government and to give Long Islanders a new opportunity to participate in an election free from fraud.

All Members of Congress, regardless of their political affiliation, must be held to the same high standards. We owe this to the American people, who trust us to represent them with integrity.
